Creative Ideas to Start Your Own Garden

I absolutely love vegetable gardens. If you want to start your own, remember to start small. A lot of beginners are overzealous, and then they end up wasting food and resenting all of the work. If you don’t know where to start, take a look online at places like Pinterest, or DIY garden sties. If you have the room, I would start out with a 10x10-foot garden. Pick crops that can provide you with food through the season—like peppers, tomatoes, and squash. Make sure that your garden plot has 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight. If you can’t find a sunny spot, no worries—try planting things like spinach and lettuce. Make sure your soil is well-drained and moist.

Most people think of row cropping when they think of vegetable gardens. Row cropping is a garden that has plants in single file with a pathway in between. While this is great for large fields, you won’t get as many vegetables in a smaller space. I’d recommend intensive cropping. You have to do more weeding by hand, but you’ll be able to put more plants in one space. Need some more gardening ideas and tips? Keep reading!

Start Small

If you’re a beginning gardener, it’s always best to start small. You may have a large yard, but unless you’re a professional landscaper, you’ll get overwhelmed and your expensive plants might die. Try an indoor AeroGarden, try a hardy vegetable garden, or try some flower boxes. You’ll be more successful as a gardener if you focus on a small project and stick with hardy plants that thrive in your region.

Try a Garden Scrapbook

Professionals like interior designers often keep a scrapbook to generate ideas and to mix different colors, patterns, etc. You can do the same thing with your garden. Before you go out and buy all sorts of plants, put together a scrapbook of potential items. Some plants flourish well together, some colors look better together. If you don’t have time to compose your own ideas, try the Big Book of Garden Designs by Marianne Lipanovich.
